5 million weekly active users. The fastest-growing segment isn't developers.

Non-developers now make up 20% of Codex users, growing 3x faster than developers. Data analytics requests are up 110%, research 37%, reports and docs 36%. OpenAI repositioned Codex from "coding tool" to "tool for all knowledge workers," and shipped three core updates: role-specific plugins, Sites, and Annotations.

Role-specific plugins

6 industry plugins covering data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, public equity investing, and investment banking. Each bundles apps, skills, and workflows for that role. 62 apps, 110 skills total. Plugin configs are on GitHub.

Data analytics connects Snowflake, Databricks, Hex, Tableau. Creative production connects Figma, Canva, Shutterstock. Sales connects Salesforce and HubSpot. More plugins coming: corporate finance, private equity, marketing strategy, strategy consulting, legal.

Sites: the biggest change

Codex can now generate interactive, hosted web apps with a shareable URL. Anyone in your workspace can open, use, and contribute.

OpenAI calls Sites "a new kind of canvas." Dashboards, scenario planners, project boards, review workspaces, lightweight tools. The core idea: instead of fitting work into a single tool or file, create a site that fits the work.

Examples from the announcement:

  • Product launch hub with milestones, owners, key decisions. Updates as details change.
  • Financial model turned into a scenario planner. Leadership compares assumptions directly.
  • Customer review page with product updates, open questions, usage trends, next steps.

If you've used Claude Artifacts or Gemini Canvas, Sites is in the same family but pushed further. Artifacts are single-session, single-user. Sites are persistent, hosted, and shareable across your org.

OpenAI is building a partner ecosystem with Vercel, Wix, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Webflow. Currently preview-only for Business and Enterprise users.

Annotations

Select any part of a document, spreadsheet, slide, or site and ask Codex to change it. Swap a font on a navbar. Add a data source to an investment claim. Fix a chart label. Precise edits without starting over.

Caveats

  • Sites is Business ($25/user/mo) and Enterprise only. Pro users don't get it.
  • The enterprise examples (Zapier, NVIDIA) are from OpenAI's blog, not independent reports.
  • 62 apps and 110 skills sounds big, but plugin depth is untested outside OpenAI.
  • Claude already has 200+ connectors on an open protocol (MCP). OpenAI's plugins run in a closed directory. Different model, different trade-offs.

What to do next

  • Business/Enterprise users: try Sites at chatgpt.com/codex. Build a dashboard for something real.
  • Plugin developers: read the role-based-plugins repo for the plugin spec.
  • Everyone else: wait for independent usage reports before switching workflows.

Bankers, salespeople, analysts, designers. People who never used an AI coding tool now have an entry point. That market is much larger than developers alone.
